About Oh Chai Hoo 胡財和
Oh Chai Hoo (b. 1960, Singapore) is a multidisciplinary artist known for working across painting, ceramics, calligraphy, and seal carving. Since graduating from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1982, he has remained an active figure in Singapore’s art scene. His artistic practice reflects a strong foundation in traditional ink techniques while exploring contemporary visual language. As a result, his works often combine craftsmanship with experimentation.
Over the years, his artworks have been exhibited in Singapore and internationally. Moreover, his works are held in both private and institutional collections, including the National Museum of Singapore and Istana.
Early life and Apprenticeship
Oh Chai Hoo began exploring art at a young age. In fact, he started creating artworks when he was only fourteen years old. Shortly afterwards, he participated in his first group exhibition at the age of fifteen alongside established artists such as Chen Wen Hsi.
Later, he enrolled at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, where he graduated in 1982. During his studies, he developed strong technical foundations in traditional ink painting and calligraphy. However, he soon began experimenting beyond conventional methods in order to develop a more personal artistic voice.
Artistic Style and Techniques
Oh Chai Hoo’s artistic techniques is characterised by constant experimentation with materials and techniques. While ink on rice paper remains central to his work, he also explores ceramics, seal carving, and mixed media. Consequently, his artworks often reveal layered textures and dynamic visual compositions.
Moreover, his fascination with natural formations—especially rocks and geological structures—frequently appears in his works. These forms symbolise the passage of time and the quiet forces shaping the natural world. As a result, many of his paintings evoke both physical landscapes and philosophical reflections.
At the same time, Oh’s work reflects a dialogue between Eastern artistic traditions and contemporary experimentation. Therefore, his practice continues to expand the possibilities of ink-based art.
Themes and Inspirations
Nature plays an important role in Oh’s artistic inspiration. In particular, he is fascinated by the structure of rocks and mountainous landscapes. Consequently, many of his paintings capture the movement and energy of natural forces.
At the same time, his works often incorporate philosophical reflections and poetic imagery. Through expressive brushstrokes and dynamic compositions, he explores the relationship between nature, time, and human perception.
Meanwhile, some of his more recent works combine calligraphy with collage-like arrangements. These compositions introduce fragmented texts and torn surfaces, encouraging viewers to engage more actively with the visual narrative.
Exhibitions and Recognition
Since graduating from NAFA, Oh Chai Hoo has participated in numerous exhibitions in Singapore and abroad. For example, his works have been shown in Taiwan, China, the United Kingdom, Korea, and Japan.
In recognition of his artistic contributions, he has received several awards. These include the Highly Commended Award for Abstract Medium in the UOB Painting of the Year competition, as well as the Siaw-Tao Achievement Award and the Siaw-Tao Best Artwork Award.
Furthermore, he has actively contributed to the local arts community. For instance, he served as vice-president of the Siaw-Tao Chinese Seal-Carving Calligraphy & Painting Society from 2013 to 2021.
Legacy
Through decades of experimentation and exploration, Oh Chai Hoo has developed a distinctive artistic language that bridges traditional Chinese ink painting and contemporary artistic expression.
Today, his works continue to attract collectors and audiences who appreciate the balance between craftsmanship, spontaneity, and philosophical depth. Consequently, Oh remains an important figure in Singapore’s contemporary ink art scene.
