Introduction
iPreciation presents The Space Between, a solo exhibition by Singaporean artist Lim Jia Qi (b. 1997). The exhibition explores the subtle tension between nature and the built environment.
Lim Jia Qi observes everyday spaces in Singapore. She studies housing estates, trees, walkways, and city greenery. Through these observations, she captures quiet and poetic moments that often go unnoticed.
To express these ideas, the artist combines printmaking and painting on carved wood panels. As a result, her works capture fleeting impressions of light, space, and memory within the urban landscape.
About the Exhibition:
The Space Between marks an important shift in Lim Jia Qi’s artistic practice.
Previously, the artist focused on physical structures in Singapore’s urban landscape. For example, her earlier works depicted benches, void decks, and other everyday elements. These subjects reflected her interest in how architecture shapes communal life.
However, her recent works move beyond these tangible structures. Instead, she focuses on shadows, silhouettes, and subtle traces of space.
In her Shadow Series, Lim Jia Qi uses softly coloured surfaces and delicate forms. These elements evoke stillness, memory, and emotional resonance.
Moreover, the artist creates her works on intricately carved woodblock panels. She layers painting and printmaking techniques on these panels. Consequently, the artworks blur the boundaries between:
-
nature and architecture
-
tradition and innovation
-
presence and absence
The exhibition features eighteen works that reveal the evolution of Lim Jia Qi’s artistic language. Collectively, the pieces transform familiar urban environments into contemplative atmospheres.
Ultimately, the exhibition invites viewers to pause and reflect. It encourages audiences to reconsider how we experience space within Singapore’s carefully shaped urban ecology.
