Exhibition Overview

iPreciation is honoured to present 28 important ink paintings by Gao Xingjian. Among them, 17 works were created between 2020 and 2022.

This exhibition celebrates Gao’s remarkable artistic achievements. It also marks a significant honour he received in 2023.

In January 2023, Gao turned 83. Shortly after, Emmanuel Macron awarded him the prestigious Legion of Honour at the Élysée Palace. The recognition acknowledges Gao’s profound contributions to literature and the arts.

International audiences know Gao as a Nobel Prize laureate in Literature. However, his creative practice spans many disciplines. He works as a novelist, playwright, poet, theatre and film director, painter, photographer, and philosopher.

Life and Artistic Background

Gao Xingjian was born in Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province, China, in 1940. Later, he moved to Paris in 1987. He eventually became a French citizen in 1997.

The Milan Arts Festival 2008 once described Gao as a “modern Renaissance man.” His artistic range reflects this title.

Gao paints exclusively with ink. In traditional Chinese culture, ink carries the spirit and inner energy of the painter. Therefore, the medium plays a central role in his creative philosophy.

Although Gao moved away from Western oil painting in the 1970s, traces of those techniques remain. For example, he layers different shades of ink to create depth and atmosphere. As a result, his works combine classical tradition with contemporary experimentation.

Painting Process and Philosophy

Gao focuses on intuitive depictions of his inner mindscape. Instead of planning compositions rigidly, he allows his thoughts to guide the process.

Before and during painting, he often listens to classical music. The rhythms and harmonies influence his movements. Gradually, he transforms musical impressions into expressive brushstrokes.

However, Gao does not complete a painting in one sitting. Instead, he often pauses and leaves the work untouched for days, months, or even years. Later, he returns to it with fresh insight. Sometimes he makes adjustments. Other times he leaves it unchanged.

Once satisfied, he mounts the painting and assigns an extemporaneous title. At that moment, the artwork reaches its final form.

For viewers, the result appears as a visual stream of consciousness. The blurred imagery reflects the fleeting nature of thought. Ideas emerge, fade, and transform—just like the human mind itself.

As Gao famously said, “painting begins where language fails.” Each viewer therefore experiences the work differently. Meaning becomes personal, introspective, and deeply individual.

Awards and International Recognition

Over the years, Gao has received numerous international honours. For instance, he received the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in 1992.

In 2000, the Swedish Academy awarded him the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Academy praised his work for its universal relevance, profound insight, and linguistic creativity.

Subsequently, Gao received several international distinctions. These include the Golden Plate Award, the Lions Award from the New York Public Library, and the La Milanesiana Award.

In 2003, the city of Marseille organised “Year of Gao Xingjian.” The event featured exhibitions of his paintings, theatre productions such as August Snow, and other creative works.

Later, in 2008, Gao became the guest of honour at the La Milanesiana. In the same year, Hong Kong organised a festival celebrating his multidisciplinary achievements.

More recently, in 2019, Gao received the Premio Roma for his book Per un nuovo Rinascimento.

Exhibitions and Collections

Since 1985, Gao has held more than seventy solo exhibitions across Europe, the United States, and Asia. Museums and galleries frequently feature his work in group exhibitions and international art fairs.

In 2005, the Singapore Art Museum organised a retrospective exhibition of his work.

Later, in 2015, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium and the Museum of Ixelles held a major double exhibition. The Museum of Ixelles presented a retrospective of his paintings. Meanwhile, the Royal Museums displayed six monumental works that now remain in their permanent collection.

Today, many international institutions collect Gao’s works. These include the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Musée Guimet, the Singapore Art Museum, and the National Museum of History.

Exhibition Overview

iPreciation presents Solitude 《幽居》 — A Solo Exhibition by Gao Xingjian. The exhibition features 21 important works created between 1991 and 2012.

Gao Xingjian (b. 1940) is an internationally acclaimed novelist, playwright, poet, theatre and film director, painter, and philosopher. He was born in Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province, China. Later, he moved to Paris in 1988. In 2000, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Through decades of creative practice, Gao combines Chinese and Asian philosophical traditions with European literary and artistic influences. As a result, his work reflects both Eastern thought and Western modernism.

Literary and Artistic Achievements

Gao’s literary works reach audiences around the world. His novels have been translated into more than forty languages. Likewise, theatre companies across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Australia regularly stage his plays.

Over the years, Gao has also built a remarkable career as a visual artist. Museums and galleries have organised more than one hundred exhibitions of his paintings. Among them, more than ninety were solo exhibitions.

In addition, publishers have produced over fifty catalogues of his paintings and photographs. During the past decade, Gao has also created three poetic films. These works combine poetry, painting, drama, dance, and music. Consequently, film becomes a comprehensive artistic medium in his practice.

Ink as Artistic Language

Critics often describe Gao as a “modern Renaissance man,” a title highlighted by the Milan Arts Festival 2008. Despite his early training in oil painting, Gao chose a different artistic path.

Instead of working with Western media, he paints almost exclusively with ink. In Chinese tradition, ink reflects the inner spirit of the artist. Therefore, the medium becomes an extension of the painter’s mind.

However, Gao’s early oil painting practice still influences his technique. For example, he layers different tones of ink to create depth and atmosphere. This method produces visual richness while maintaining the purity of the ink medium.

Interestingly, Gao often paints on large canvases instead of traditional rice paper. The scale allows him to explore greater spatial depth. At the same time, vast empty spaces introduce a quiet spiritual presence.

Using only ink and subtle tonal variations, he creates complex worlds of light and shadow. These elements reveal an amorphous space that he calls the “inner vision.” The imagery stands between abstraction and figuration and exists beyond conventional time.

Painting and Inner Vision

Emotion plays a central role in Gao’s creative process. Rather than following strict rules of composition, he allows intuition to guide each painting.

For this reason, his works rarely contain a fixed light source. Instead, forms appear to glow from within darkness. Meanwhile, darkness often emerges from areas of light.

This unusual approach reflects the fluid nature of human thought. Ideas surface briefly before fading away. Consequently, Gao’s paintings resemble a visual stream of consciousness.

The artist himself describes this philosophy clearly: “painting begins where language fails.” Viewers may look at the same work, yet each person interprets it differently. Meaning becomes personal and introspective.

As Gao explains, “The image is in you and you are in the painting.”

Awards and Recognition

Beyond the Nobel Prize in Literature, Gao has received numerous international honours. For example, France awarded him the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in 1992.

He later received the Legion of Honour in 2002. Other distinctions include the Golden Plate Award, the Lions Award from the New York Public Library, and the La Milanesiana Award.

Universities around the world have also recognised his achievements. Several institutions awarded him honorary doctorates, including universities in Hong Kong, France, Belgium, and Taiwan.

In 2018, the Aix‑Marseille University established the Gao Xingjian Research Space in its library. Later, in 2021, National Taiwan Normal University founded the Gao Xingjian Center.

Exhibitions and Collections

Gao’s paintings appear in many important international collections. These include the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Musée Guimet, the Singapore Art Museum, and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum.

In 2003, the city of Marseille organised “Year of Gao Xingjian.” The event presented his paintings, theatrical works such as August Snow, and other creative projects.

Later, Hong Kong hosted the Gao Xingjian Arts Festival in 2008 to celebrate his multidisciplinary achievements.

In 2015, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium and the Museum of Ixelles organised a major double exhibition. The Museum of Ixelles presented a retrospective of Gao’s paintings. Meanwhile, the Royal Museums permanently installed six of his monumental works in their galleries.

Tay Bak Chiang

Contemporary Interpretations of Chinese Painting

Tay Bak Chiang (b. 1973, Malaysia/Singapore) continues to expand the possibilities of contemporary Chinese painting.

After a successful solo exhibition at iPreciation in 2014, the artist presents a new body of works at Art Basel Hong Kong 2016.

These paintings combine acrylic and mineral pigments on canvas, pushing the traditional language of ink painting into a contemporary format. The works feature luminous colours ranging from deep blues to shimmering greens and yellows.

Nature and the Stone Series

Tay’s stone paintings began after walks in Singapore’s Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. During these walks, he observed the powerful forms of rocks and boulders in nature.

Although stones appear inanimate, the artist sees them as forms filled with life and personality. To express this idea, he carefully manipulates colour and tone.

Through subtle gradations, he creates depth and translucency that resemble traditional ink washes.

The Guqin Series

In this exhibition, Tay also explores a new subject: the guqin, one of China’s oldest musical instruments.

The guqin is a seven-string zither associated with Chinese literati culture. Historically, scholars believed that mastering the instrument helped cultivate the mind and spirit.

Tay interprets the instrument in a minimalist way. Instead of depicting it realistically, he often suggests its presence through outlines, shadows, or symbolic forms.

Through these compositions, the artist evokes poetry, emotion, and quiet contemplation.

Gao Xingjian

Writer, Painter and Filmmaker

Gao Xingjian (b. 1940, China/France) is an internationally recognised writer, playwright, director, painter, and photographer.

In 2000, he became the first Chinese writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Over the years, he has received several international honours. These include the Asian Cultural Council Fellowship in 1989, the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1992, and the Legion of Honour in 2002.

Film Presentation at Art Basel

At Art Basel Hong Kong 2016, Gao presents the short film “Après le Déluge (After the Flood)”, created in 2008.

The film runs for approximately twenty-eight minutes and unfolds like a cinematic poem. Dialogue is completely absent. Instead, movement, sound, and imagery shape the narrative.

Black-and-white paintings form the background for the scenes, while performers act before projected images. Occasionally, faint colours appear, suggesting moments when life and consciousness return.

This experimental film merges painting, performance, and cinema into a single visual language.

After the Flood

Gao Xingjian: After the Flood
with an essay by Jason C. Kuo
Publisher: iPRECIATION
Language: English / Chinese
ISBN: 978-9810772949

Introduction

Gao Xingjian is widely recognised as one of the most influential interdisciplinary artists of our time. In 2000, he became the first Chinese writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. In addition to his literary achievements, Gao has developed a distinctive visual language through painting, theatre, and film.

The publication “Gao Xingjian: After the Flood” explores this multidisciplinary practice. Specifically, it examines how Gao connects his ink paintings with experimental cinema. The book also includes an essay by art historian Jason C. Kuo, offering deeper insight into the artist’s creative philosophy.

The Publication

Gao Xingjian: After the Flood is a bilingual publication released by iPreciation. The book is available in both English and Chinese.

Moreover, the publication brings together Gao Xingjian’s monochrome ink paintings with images from his experimental film After the Flood. As a result, readers can see how the artist moves fluidly between painting, performance, and cinema.

Gao Xingjian’s Artistic Practice

Throughout his career, Gao Xingjian has explored new ways to expand traditional ink painting. Rather than following conventional methods, he experiments with tonal variations and atmospheric compositions.

At the same time, Gao works in filmmaking. Since 2006, he has produced several experimental films that extend his artistic vision beyond the canvas. Consequently, these works combine theatre, dance, painting, and cinematic imagery into what he often describes as “cinematic poems”.

Themes in After the Flood

The film After the Flood reflects many of Gao’s recurring themes. For example, the work explores memory, solitude, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Visually, the film relies on black-and-white imagery. However, subtle variations in light and shadow create powerful emotional depth. Through layered ink textures and abstract compositions, Gao invites viewers to reflect on the relationship between imagination and reality.

Gao Xingjian – Ink on Canvas Paintings

banner_GXJ

Exhibition Period: 23th February – 10th March 2012
Venue: iPRECIATION, Jardine House, Central Hong Kong

Born in Jiangxi Province, eastern China in 1940, Gao Xingjian is one of the world’s most respected multidisciplinary artists. An acclaimed novelist, painter, playwright, poet and filmmaker, Gao’s creations have been showcased worldwide, notably in cities including Vienna, New York, London, Stockholm, Malmo, Poznan, Luxembourg, Brussels, Hong Kong, Madrid, Barcelona, Mons, Berlin, Aachen, Baden-Baden, Taipei and Singapore. Gao was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2000 for his prodigious novel ‘Soul Mountain’, the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government in 1992, and the Lions Award by the New York Public Library in 2006.

Between 2008 and 2010, a majority of Gao Xingjian’s ink paintings were executed on canvas instead of rice paper, invoking a unique textural element to his work. The play with light and the coagulation of different hues of black, grey ink, takes on a different dimension. While the colours do not synthesise as readily on a canvas base, what is intriguing is the essence of light: The contrast between light and dark is amplified as each brushstroke gains a renewed strength, providing a fresh intensity to his paintings.

The recent ink on canvas paintings present more defined brushstrokes and segregation of hues. These strokes are alike to demarcation lines- a variation of soft, hard lines that appear to confine or ascertain a voluntary separation from the world, such as ‘Le Tourbillon’, where a figure enclosed in a small sheath of light stands surrounded by a dark, odd circle. Situated in the indistinct world between the figurative and abstract, Gao’s paintings, whether created on paper or canvas, summon the ambiguity of forms that lead one to question, probe and approach an introspective vision.

Artworks are currently available for preview in iPreciation Hong Kong. Please contact +852 2537 8869 to arrange for a private viewing.

A Solo Exhibition of Gao Xingjian

Exhibition Period: 18th March – 3rd April 2010
Venue: iPRECIATION, The Fullerton Hotel, Singapore

Artist, script-writer, filmmaker and novelist, Gao Xingjian is renowned for his prodigious novel ‘Soul Mountain’, which honoured Gao as the first author, to be awarded the Nobel Prize for a body of works written in the Chinese language. Gao was also honoured with the title of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government in 1992, and the Lions Award by the New York Public Library in 2006. To date, Gao’s paintings have been exhibited worldwide, notably in cities including Vienna, New York, London, Stockholm, Malmo, Poznan, Luxembourg, Brussels, Hong Kong, Madrid, Barcelona, Mons, Berlin, Aachen, Baden-Baden, Taipei and Singapore. Gao’s exhibition in December 2009, held at the Berardo collection of the Sintra Museum of Modern Art, Lisbon, Portugal, featured Gao’s Ink paintings, with a special screening of his recent film, ‘After the Flood’.

iPRECIATION Singapore is delighted to present the inaugural launch of Gao’s new Ink on Canvas paintings, with the Asian Premier of his film ‘After the Flood’, at The Arts House. Gao Xingjian’s 14 exclusive paintings are executed in 2008 and 2009, and are implemented on canvas as opposed to rice paper. The canvas renders a different textural quality to Gao’s works; one that continues to augment Gao’s experiential gift with ink, whilst renewing perspectives of the artist’s individualistic, emotive codex. This special duo showcase will augment Gao Xingjian’s multidisciplinary gifts, as we gain insight from the themes that bind his works across genres. For further information or artwork enquiries, please contact enquiry@ipreciation.com or +65 6339 0678.

Gao Xing Jian

exhibition-2007-gxj2

24 November – 1 December 2007

The Fullerton Hotel 1 Fullerton Square #01-08 Singapore 049178

SINGAPORE- Following his exhibitions at the Ludwig Museum, Koblenz Germany and The Snite Museum of Art, Notre Dame University, U.S.A. (11 September to 21 October), iPRECIATION will hold Nobel Laureate Gao Xingjian’s solo-exhibition in Singapore from 23 November to 1 December 2007! Featured in his exhibition at iPRECIATION are his recent philosophical ink on paper paintings (return exhibits from The Snite Museum of Art, Notre Dame University, U.S.A.) that display his remarkable artistic development of recent years. The multi award-winning art master will also make a journey to Singapore from Paris, where he resides, to grace the opening.

As Gao has stopped traveling between 2003 to later part of 2006 due to his health, this exhibition in Singapore will indeed be of great significance for 2 reasons. Firstly, it will mark Gao’s rare public appearance in Singapore since 1986. Secondly, this solo-exhibition will highlight the inaugural public display in Asia of some of his largest works which are extremely rare as the artist hardly creates ink paintings of such sizes.

Having captured the faithful interest of an elite group of art connoisseurs, Gao’s profound monochromatic works are elegantly appealing and interpretatively protean. They project an element of detachment and in their still presence, involuntary waves of awe engulf the viewer. Such is the silent power of Gao’s esoteric paintings. In true artistic sense, Gao’s works are unadulterated manifestations of the depths of his imaginative psyche, unfettered by stringent theories and unpolluted by “value judgments, be it social, political or ethical…” all of which he believes will spell the death of creativity (Gao, Return to Painting, p.14).

Visit this exclusive solo-exhibition at iPRECIATION to view works that mere words are insufficient to describe. View works that simply and purely epitomize ART. Words are not needed.
