Biography

Ye Jianqing (b. 1972, Zhejiang Province, China) is a highly respected contemporary Chinese artist whose practice is dedicated to redefining tradition within a modern context. An accomplished painter and scholar, he earned both his Master’s degree and PhD from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing, where he now serves as a professor in the Fresco Department.

Emerging as a significant voice in contemporary art, Ye’s work represents a thoughtful and valuable return to subtlety and philosophical depth. He seamlessly integrates the refined aesthetics and spiritual concerns of traditional Chinese painting with contemporary techniques, primarily working in oil on canvas. His landscapes and cityscapes are rendered in a distinctive, dreamlike manner, characterized by soft-focus imagery, dusky palettes, and diaphanous textures. This approach evokes a profound sense of poetic melancholy and a yearning for a cultural past that is rapidly disappearing amidst China’s relentless urbanization.

A central and recognizable theme in his oeuvre is the depiction of hutongs—the traditional winding alleyways of ancient Chinese neighborhoods. These spaces, deeply embedded in the social and historical fabric of city life, serve as powerful metaphors for memory, transition, and loss. Ye Jianqing’s paintings do not merely document these scenes; they transform them into emotive vessels for cultural reflection. His blurred, fluid images actively pursue and preserve vanishing moments, capturing the poignant tension between a rich historical past and a homogenizing modern metropolis.

Celebrated by critics and collectors alike, Ye Jianqing’s art offers a rare and insightful visual commentary on contemporary China. His canvases stand as lasting records of cultural traces, solidified through the vision of an artist who skillfully negotiates the space between deep heritage and a unique, individualistic creative identity.
