Wang Tiande (王天德) (b. 1960, Shanghai, China) is a leading figure in contemporary Chinese ink art, renowned for redefining the relationship between calligraphy, painting, and conceptual practice. Trained in traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy, Wang extends ink beyond brush and paper, incorporating acts of burning, piercing, and inscription to explore themes of time, memory, impermanence, and spiritual reflection. His works occupy a meditative space where absence and presence, destruction and creation, coexist.
Wang holds a Ph.D. in Calligraphy from the China Academy of Art and a BFA in Chinese Painting from the Zhejiang Fine Arts Academy. He has presented major solo exhibitions at prominent institutions and galleries worldwide, including the Palace Museum, Beijing, Suzhou Museum, Guangdong Museum of Art, Today Art Museum, Chambers Fine Art (New York), Alisan Fine Arts (Hong Kong), and iPreciation, Singapore. His work has been featured in landmark international exhibitions such as Inside Out: New Chinese Art and major ink biennales and museum surveys across Asia, Europe, and North America.
Wang’s works are held in prestigious public and corporate collections, including the British Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, Brooklyn Museum, National Art Museum of China, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Shanghai Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the JP Morgan and Fidelity Investments art collections. His practice occupies a pivotal position in the global discourse on contemporary ink, bridging literati tradition with conceptual and material experimentation.
