Hung Liu 劉虹 (1948–2021) was a Chinese-born American contemporary artist whose work engages history, memory, and displacement. At the age of 20, she was sent to the countryside for compulsory re-education under Mao’s communist regime. Liu’s evocative depictions of hardship, often featuring early 20th century migrant and female figures, draw from the visual language of socialist realism and its vivid red palette. Through her signature “weeping realism,” marked by layered brushwork and veils of ink washes, Liu reworked archival imagery into powerful reflections on resilience and loss. Her works are held in major museum collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
