Biography

Baet Yeok Kuan (b. 1961, Singapore) is a leading Singaporean contemporary artist whose practice spans sculpture, installation, drawing, and public art. Over a career of more than three decades, he has consistently examined the dynamic relationship between form, space, environment, and human presence, positioning his work at the intersection of material inquiry and social consciousness.

Baet received his Diploma in Fine Arts (Painting) from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1988, before completing a Master of Arts in Fine Art (Sculpture) at the University of Central England in Birmingham, United Kingdom, in 1992. His academic grounding in both painting and sculpture informs a practice that is conceptually rigorous and materially expansive.

He has presented numerous solo exhibitions at major institutions and galleries in Singapore and abroad, including the National Museum Art Gallery, Singapore, Sculpture Square, Art Forum Gallery, and exhibitions in the Philippines and the United Kingdom. Baet has also participated extensively in international group exhibitions and biennales across Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia, including the Asian International Art Exhibition, ASEAN travelling exhibitions, and museum presentations in Japan, South Korea, China, Germany, and Canada.

A recipient of the Young Artist Award from the National Arts Council Singapore in 1995, Baet has received numerous accolades for his contributions to contemporary art, including major prizes in sculpture and painting competitions in Singapore and internationally. His works are held in significant public and institutional collections such as the Singapore Art Museum, National Gallery Singapore (former National Museum Art Gallery), NUS Museum, Fukuoka Art Museum, Singapore Changi Airport, and various public spaces and civic institutions.

In addition to his artistic practice, Baet has played an influential role in arts education and cultural leadership. He has served as a lecturer at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Nanyang Technological University (NIE), and international institutions, and has held leadership positions within key arts organisations including the Modern Art Society and the Federation of Art Societies Singapore. His longstanding commitment to mentorship, public art, and institutional development has significantly shaped Singapore’s contemporary art landscape.
