Biography

Au Ka Wai (b. 1973, Hong Kong) is a contemporary artist whose practice encompasses painting, sculpture, and experimental art forms, marked by a sustained inquiry into perception, materiality, and spatial experience. His work reflects an early engagement with both Eastern philosophical thought and Western conceptual approaches, resulting in a practice that is contemplative, process-driven, and formally rigorous.

Au received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1996, followed by a Master of Fine Arts from Chelsea College of Art & Design, London, in 2000. His academic training in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom provided a critical foundation for his cross-disciplinary approach and sensitivity to context, scale, and audience experience.

He has presented solo exhibitions at major cultural institutions in Hong Kong, including the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Exhibition Gallery and Sir Run Run Shaw Hall, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions internationally. These include the International Festival of Experiment and Performance Art in St. Petersburg, Russia, as well as curated exhibitions in Hong Kong and Singapore.

In recognition of his artistic contribution, Au was awarded the Urban Council Fine Arts Award at the Contemporary Hong Kong Art Biennial in 1996, and later the Vermont Studio Center Freeman Fellowship in 2002. Through his evolving practice, Au Ka Wai continues to investigate the boundaries between form, space, and experience, positioning his work within broader conversations on contemporary art in the region and beyond.
