Kiat (Johnatan Nah) (b.1972)

Since 2020, Johnatan Nah has explored new ways of creating art. This shift happened during the pandemic, when access to materials became limited. As a result, he developed more resourceful and flexible approaches.

Adapting Through Constraints

During lockdowns, Kiat began experimenting with both digital and analogue methods. Consequently, he created a hybrid technique that blends the two.

Moreover, his process draws inspiration from music. In particular, he uses a method similar to resampling, where existing material is reworked into something new.

Themes of Emotion and Freedom

At the core of Kiat’s work are strong emotional themes. In addition, he often explores the idea of freedom through abstract forms.

Because of this, his artworks feel expressive and open-ended. They invite viewers to interpret meaning in their own way.

Working Across Multiple Mediums

Kiat does not limit himself to one form of art. Instead, he works across many disciplines. For example, he paints on walls and canvases. At the same time, he composes music for performances and installations.

Furthermore, he collaborates with brands and cultural institutions. This allows him to blur the line between art and design.

Collaborations and Notable Projects

Over the years, Kiat has worked with a wide range of organisations. These include The Peranakan Museum, ArtScience Museum, and Singapore Tourism Board.

In addition, he has collaborated with global brands such as Nike, Adidas, and Dior.

As a result, his work reaches both artistic and commercial audiences.

Recent Exhibitions and Milestones

More recently, Kiat has presented several key projects. For instance, he showcased “Antinodes” during Singapore Art Week 2022.

Following that, he presented “Sonic Sessions” at Singapore Art Week 2024. Finally, he held his first solo exhibition, “I Against I,” at Art Outreach in 2024.
