Baet Yeok Kuan 麥毓權 (b. 1961)

About Baet Yeok Kuan

Baet Yeok Kuan is a Singaporean contemporary artist and sculptor known for his exploration of form, material, and personal memory. Over the years, he has developed a multidisciplinary practice that spans sculpture, painting, and installation. As a result, his works often invite viewers to engage with both physical materiality and conceptual depth.

Education and Early Development

Baet graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art (Painting) from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1987. Subsequently, he pursued a Master of Arts in Fine Art at the University of Central England, Birmingham, which he completed in 1992.

During this period, he refined his artistic language. At the same time, he began experimenting with different materials and approaches, laying the foundation for his later sculptural practice.

Artistic Practice and Approach

Although formally trained as a painter, Baet is widely recognised for his sculptural works. In particular, he works extensively with materials such as mild steel, often forging rather than casting his sculptures. Consequently, this process allows him to retain the physical integrity of the material while shaping organic and refined forms.

Moreover, his practice is deeply rooted in personal experience. He frequently draws inspiration from everyday objects, environments, and encounters. Therefore, his works can be understood as visual translations of memory and lived experience.

At the same time, Baet’s works remain open-ended. Rather than presenting fixed meanings, they encourage viewers to interpret and respond individually.

Exhibitions and International Engagement

Throughout his career, Baet has actively participated in both local and international exhibitions and symposiums. For instance, he represented Singapore in the New Generation Contemporary Singapore Art Exhibition and Symposium in Japan (1990).

In addition, he took part in the Second ASEAN Artist Creative Interaction in Indonesia (1997), the Singapore-India Artists Exchange Programme (1999), and an Artist-in-Residence programme at the University of the Philippines (2003).

As a result of these engagements, his practice has developed within a broader regional and global context.

Awards and Recognition

Baet has received numerous awards in recognition of his artistic achievements. Most notably, he was awarded the Young Artist Award by the National Arts Council Singapore in 1995.

Earlier in his career, he won the Grand Prize at the UOB Painting of the Year Competition in 1987. Furthermore, he received multiple accolades at the Third Tokyo Urbanart Competition in 1994, including the Area Prize and Judge Prize.

These accomplishments highlight both his technical skill and conceptual strength.

Public Art and Contributions

In addition to gallery exhibitions, Baet has contributed significantly to public art in Singapore. His works have been commissioned for prominent institutions such as Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 3, the National Museum, and the National Library Board.

Through these projects, he extends his artistic practice into public spaces. Consequently, his works engage a wider audience and become part of the everyday visual landscape.

Leadership and Influence

Beyond his individual practice, Baet has also contributed to the artistic community. Notably, he served as President of the Modern Art Society Singapore from 2003 to 2004.

During this time, he supported artistic dialogue and development within the local art scene. Therefore, his impact extends beyond his own artworks to the broader ecosystem of contemporary art in Singapore.
