Published in conjunction with the Asian film premiere of Silhouette/Shadow during the third annual performing arts festival, Initiation International 2007 held in Singapore at The Necessary Stage Blackbox and The Picturehouse, this publication contains new, translated poetry and essays by 2000 Nobel Prize laureate in literature, Gao Xingjian, and his film collaborators. Silhouette/Shadow is a film created by Gao Xingjian. In the form of a “cinepoem”, this film is a fable of our times, portraying Gao’s emotional landscape and meditates upon the humanity of our present world.
With a preface written by the editor Fiona Sze-Lorrain, it also contains a new essay by Gao on his cinematic craft (translated from Chinese by Mabel Lee) and the unabridged version of the poem “The Way of the Wandering Bird” (translated from French by Ned Burgess and Fiona Sze-Lorrain).
