SINGAPORE - If Hollywood is synonymous to style and glamour then surely a Golden Globe affair demands nothing less than lavishness and quality. For Zhang Jian-Jun’s Mirage Garden #5 to be commissioned at the 2007 Golden Globe Awards Party, it perceptibly speaks volumes of Zhang’s talent.
The strikingly novel commissioned work by Zhang is a sculpture of a scholar rock from his "Garden" series. A naturally-occurring rock appreciated by scholars in ancient China thousand of years ago, the scholar rock is symbolic of an epoch in history. As he imaginatively re-creates the scholar rock with modern material that is silicone rubber and further rendering it with his profound musing, Zhang's gift in his ability to artistically manipulate time is echoed in this exceptional contemporary art work.
Today an Anjunct Professor at the New York University's Fine Arts Department, Zhang has also staged numerous exhibitions internationally and his works are collected worldwide in prestigious museums. With so much under his belt at 52 years of age, Zhang is indeed an exciting contemporary artist not to be ignored and the Golden Globe definitely hasn't.
