About the Artist
Press Conference: 1 August 2007, 2.00PM Award Ceremony: 13 September 2007, 6.00PM – 7.40PM Singapore- Though the collaboration amongst academia, businesses and Fukuoka city authorities, the agenda of the Fukuoka Asian Culture Prizes (est. 1990) was founded on the mission of promoting the myriad of Asian cultures as a means to peace. Now in its 18th year of existence, the coveted Fukuoka Arts & Culture Prize is conferred upon master Taiwanese sculptor JU MING by the committee. Incepted to recognize the outstanding contributions of individuals or organizations that have supported the advancement of the unique diversity of arts and culture in Asia, this important prize is essentially buttressed by the vital urgency of preserving the primary cultural element that is being encroached by rapid globalization. To ensure an impartial decision in awarding the prize, the Nominating Council is comprised of an estimated 4,000 experts in 54 countries and regions; they come from various education and research institutions, arts and culture organizations, and news media, making up a fairly represented body. Essentially, the sculptural art by JU MING uniquely exemplifies Asia’s rich culture and creatively expresses Eastern spirituality. His art is endowed with meaningfully potent cultural messages that are inherently Asian in their philosophy at the same time retaining the free interpretational value of true art itself, not fettered by geographical constraints. Being a munificent patron of the arts, JU has also contributed selflessly to the art world and Juming Museum is the materialization of such a generous spirit. Thus, it is without a shadow of a doubt, JU MING is indeed the deserving 2007 recipient of this prestigious award. |
