After years of hiatus, the pioneer of modern Chinese sculpting will return in September 2007 at the Rotunda Exchange Square! He is the remarkable recipient of the MBE awarded by the Queen of England for his outstanding contribution in the contemporary art movement in Hong Kong, particularly in his development of the unique cast paper works. He is none other than master sculptor, CHEUNG YEE (b. 1936).
Opening on 10 September, this phenomenal exhibition will showcase Cheung’s famous sculptures and popular cast paper works which project elements from an array of interesting themes; one of which is the Sanfuhuangtu 《三辅黄图》 (Annotations on the Rule of the Yellow Emperor). This ancient literature is propelled to life by his individualistic bronze sculptural works which express the North God or xuanwu 玄武 , represented by the combined form of the tortoise and the snake. Consequently a keen observer may notice that a number of his sculptures show more spatial openings, symbolic of the tortoise shell, and worm-like figures, representative of the snake.
Cheung is a 1958 graduate of the Taiwan Normal University and is the 1988 “Sculptor of the Year” award winner presented by the Hong Kong Artists’ Guild. His extraordinary works of art are collected by numerous prestigious museums including the Hong Kong Museum of Art (Hong Kong), Museum of Modern Art (Mexico City), Taipei Fine Art Museum (Taiwan), among many others. They are also in various private collections in Europe, Asia and America.
The iPRECIATION-organized exhibition will extend till 17 September at The Rotunda, Exchange Square, Central, Hong Kong and a monograph will be published for this occasion to be released during this special period. Don’t miss it!
